A Roman Catholic Church and School
in the Diocese of Columbus
Finding Us
We are a friendly, medium-sized parish on the North side of Columbus, known as Northland area. You may not recognize us as a church at first, but that is because our church and school share the same building.
Visitors
We love to see visitors at our masses. We especially invite those who may come from other countries, as we have Haitian, Nigerian, and Brazilian Catholic Communities officially represented at our parish. Please feel free to bring your own style of dress and language with you!
How Long is Mass?
Weekend mass (Saturday evening and Sunday morning) is about 50 minutes. Weekday masses (Tuesday through Friday) start at 8:30AM and are finished by 9AM. These masses are more meditative, with less preaching and more time for silence. During the school year, Friday morning mass is an All-School mass.
Fellowship
After masses on the first Sunday of the month, we invite everyone to join together for coffee, doughnuts, and fellowship in the St. Julie Room, which is down the hall from the Church.
Children
Children of all ages are part of our community, and we welcome them at all masses. While we do not have a designated “children’s room,” some parents have found that the vestibule is a good space for little ones to move around, while still being able to see and hear the mass. There is a dedicated children’s liturgy for K-4th graders during the 11AM Sunday mass.
As Pope Francis says, “an authentic faith- which is never comfortable or completely personal- always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.” (The Joy of the Gospel, 183). At St. Matthias, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. We believe in active participation in both the liturgy and in community life. Whether it is serving as a lector at mass, volunteering at our parish garage sale, or signing up to bring food for a local shelter, all of it is important. We are also open to new suggestions as to how to best serve our local community. To start getting involved, please contact the Parish Office.
At St. Matthias, we find comfort in knowing that each one of us is unique and loved by God for who we are. We affirm the image of God in everyone who comes to us. Yet, at the same time, we also challenge each other to become more than we currently are. We seek the transformation of ourselves and society. The homilies, therefore, are designed to meet us where we are, but then try to move us in new directions. Please be open to the challenge!
St. Matthias Church and School is a one level facility. In the few places with steps, ramps are available. For those with limited mobility, you may find it best to be dropped off under the carport on Ferris Rd and come in the main entrance doors. Ushers and greeters are usually present to assist.
After communion, Eucharistic ministers will walk the aisles around each section and distribute communion to those who have not yet received it. If you would like to receive communion from your seat, please raise your hand to let the Eucharistic ministers know.
